Chemical Engineer
- Focuses on combining engineering, science (chemistry, physics & life science) & maths to produce, process / transform, transport & use chemicals, materials or energy.
- Will look at the interaction between chemicals and engineering / equipment / processes whether it be process development, equipment reliability or other areas.
Continuous Improvement Manager
- The focus on continuous improvement within engineering looks at how processes, equipment & systems are improved. Will particularly look at key areas such as cost reduction, reliability, capability, process improvement, quality and efficiency.
- Often adopts a methodologies such as lean manufacturing / 6 sigma and utilise tools from within these such as 5S, 8D, Kaizen, Kanban etc.
Calibration Engineer
- Will ensure a programme of calibration is carried out on equipment, instruments & systems to ensure they are running efficiently and minimise breakdowns.
- Often crosses over with qualification, installation and validation activities.
Process Engineer
- Focuses on the design, roll out, operation and continued improvement of how something is done. Most commonly used in production.
- Mainly either chemical engineering or mechanical engineering focused.
- Often adopts a methodologies such as lean manufacturing / 6 sigma and utilise tools from within these such as 5S, 8D, Kaizen, Kanban etc.
Mechanical Engineer
- Combines engineering, physics and materials science for the design, testing, manufacturing, operation and maintenance of machines & tools.
- One of the broadest disciplines as can work across design, R&D, manufacturing, maintenance, fitters, continuous improvement, testing, quality and other functions.
Electrical & Electronic Engineer
- A discipline which focuses on engineering relating to electricity, electronics (basically electrical circuits) & electromagnetism.
- A varying job depending on area of focus as could be component assembly, electrical testing, maintenance, development of devices or a wide range of other functions.
- Has cross over to other roles such as E&I Engineer, EC&I Engineer, Controls Engineer, Automation / Systems Engineer and C&I Engineer.
Maintenance Engineer
- Will work on planned preventative maintenance (stopping things breaking down) or reactive maintenance (fixing things that have broken down – including fault finding).
- Can be Mechanical or Electrical & Electronic Engineers. If a combination of these they are referred to as a Multi Skilled Engineer.
Production Engineer or Manufacturing Engineer
- Focuses on either just bringing in & looking after equipment in production OR the equipment side in conjunction with process engineering.
- Can be a Chemical Engineer, Mechanical Engineer or Electrical Engineer. Is in some very niche roles mixed with elements of Materials Engineering.
Quality Engineer
- Refers to engineers responsible for the development, management, auditing and continuous improvement of quality standards & systems. The addition of HS (or H&S) refers to health & safety, while the addition of E means environmental.
- Quality standards are basically a good way of working.
- Mainly Mechanical Engineer or Electrical & Electronic Engineer, although in principal could be any engineering discipline. Also often see individuals who start their career in a Scientific field, may move into a Quality Engineer function due to the cross over.
Engineering Manager
- Can refer to the Manager level of any Engineering job. However most commonly referred to Manager level within a Production environment encompassing areas such as maintenance, continuous improvement and general engineering works.
- Mainly a Chemical Engineer, Mechanical Engineer or Electrical & Electronic Engineer, although could be more niche disciplines.
